Hells Canyon Delay Efforts Fail in House Interior Panel

The House Interior Committee rejected two Symms attempts to delay Hells Canyon National Recreation Area legislation on the Snake River. An amendment seeking a three year dam moratorium was defeated 24 to 6. The panel adjourned before voting on the bill itself as members argued over hearings and irrigation needs.

Lions Donate To Beach Development in Sandpoint

The Sandpoint Lions Club contributed 2500 to the city for beach upgrades. Past President Kirby Scribner presented the donation to Parks Superintendent Bob Linday. Total Lions gifts reach 6000 over 4 1/2 years to fund gate entrance paving sidewalks curbing and landscaping.

Barge Free from Mooring Drifts Toward Bridge

A Burlington Northern barge with a crane broke loose from its moorings during high winds on Lake Pend Oreille and drifted toward the Long Highway Bridge. Deputies chased and secured the vessel at Dog Beach by 3:25 a.m. no damage reported.

School Bomb Threat Reported at Stidwell Junior High

Police investigated a bomb threat received at Stidwell Junior High just after noon recess. Chief Dick Abbott said officers found no device after a brief inquiry. a male juvenile voice made the call. Superintendent Dr. E Wayne Likens warned of a one year suspension for any student making threats.

No New Leads In Store Money Theft

Priest River Police Chief Wally Mitchell said no further leads have developed in the theft of about $2600 from the Priest River IGA. Four or five Gypsy women, all in the group, entered Aug. 26 and allegedly used a restroom near the office to access locked receipts. Detectives suggest the lock was picked while staff were downstairs. money missing was found the next day. Reports of similar incidents exist in western Montana, northern Idaho, and eastern Washington.

Four Elected By Chamber

Four Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce members have elected four new directors. An additional board member will be appointed next week to replace Jim Tinsman, who moved to JC Penney in Bozeman Montana. The new members are Dave Wall, Sherry Metz, Bob Larimer, and Allan Cox.

Council Tonight Holds Special Session on Zoning and Sewer

Sandpoint City Council meets in a special session to hear a request to waive a seven year ordinance prohibiting two dwellings on one lot. Public comments from nearby property owners are expected. The meeting also reviews expanding sewer hookups to homes on North Boyer and General Telephone Co. GN Road.
