Graves Robbery Destroys Nez Perce Burial Ground Near Clarkston
Nez Perce graves dating back over 100 years were desecrated at a site 15 miles west of Clarkston on Alpona Creek. University of Idaho anthropologist Dr. Roderick Sprague and eight workers found coffins opened, with jewelry and skulls removed. Skulls reportedly fetch high prices on illicit markets. Chief Joseph’s skull is allegedly in use as an ashtray by a named dentist.
