A yesterday Daily Bee item printed Norman C. Sommerfeld as owner of Sandpoint Realty, which was incorrect. The correct firm name is Sommerfeld Realty. We regret the error.
Eddie Rickenbacker, noted military and aviation figure, is reported in serious but improving condition after a suspected heart attack last week. Officials say his condition has stabilized and he is under medical care in Miami.
The Sandpoint Daily Bee and Pend Oreille Printers will be closed on Monday October 23 for Veteran’s Day. The next edition will publish Tuesday October 24.
President Nixon enacts a five year revenue sharing program at Independence Hall Philadelphia. Treasury to mail first checks to 38 000 states counties cities and towns. Ehrlichman says funds will be spent and immune from cuts. An additional 2.6 billion will go out on Jan 3 with ongoing payments each year.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson says Fort Belknap Builders Inc, a tribally owned firm on the Fort Belknap Reservation Montana, faces a serious financial crisis with more than 750000 dollars of debt. The Fort Belknap Community Council owes 400000 on a bank loan to start the project and build homes for the poor. The case highlights concerns over Indian self-determination and federal agency involvement in management contracts with Economic Belknaps Consultants.
Munson urged an explanation for 40 percent of this year's Idaho law graduates failing the state bar exam. He asked University of Idaho President Hartung to have the law school faculty analyze the results for the board’s December meeting. Hartung blamed the bar exam more than the school, while promising to provide data.
City officials business leaders and civic reps met with Seattle Northwest Co vice president to map a two thirds voter approval plan for a 524000 city share of a 1.5 million dollar sewage treatment upgrade funded by revenue bonds. Tom Doud detailed a three step campaign, stressing planning coordination and local promotion with committees for finances speakers and activities.
Lakeshore residents in Pend Oreille questioned Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Fisheries and Wildlife officials at Sandpoint Junior High. Col. Walter Bachus explained Pend Oreille is governed by the 1899 River and Harbors Act and became navigable after 1932 with the Albeni Falls Dam. He noted the permit backlog with 23 staff handling applications and 4700 miles of navigable water in the Seattle district.
