Assessors Converge in Burley Idaho on Tax Policy

Norma E. Strecker reports from the annual Assessor’s Convention in Burley Idaho. Governor Don Samuelson welcomed assessors and praised their work for local and state governments. Cecil Andrus and Max Yost spoke on the revised constitution. the association opposed the changes. Simplot discussed potato processing and ecology, and noted a Russia trip and world affairs understanding. A tour of a 24 hour potato processing plant was taken. Representative William C Onweiler introduced two property tax bills to be proposed next session. One expands local authority over real property and a second provides relief for low income households while the state bears exemptions costs. Livestock and timber values were phased out for 1971, all property classes renumbered for the 1971 assessment notices.

Highway Toll Reaches 266 in Idaho and Washington

Idaho woman Chrissie Pascow Tullis, 62, died in a two car crash at the State 55 and Midway Road intersection near Nampa. Ray Southwick, 71, of Clarkston Washington, was a passenger in a one car rollover on US 95 in Nez Perce County. The other driver was unidentified. Four children under 11 were hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Nampa. Rebecca LeAnn Cain, 16, of Caldwell, and two other passengers were treated at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Weather Outlook for Sandpoint Turns Cloudy With Showers

Mostly cloudy through Wednesday with a few showers and windy today. Rain chances reduce to 40 percent tonight and Wednesday. High near 55 today, low 35 tonight, and high around 50 on Wednesday.

Trans World Airlines canceled all domestic flights today after a walkout by 5400 flight attendants. About 20 international flights may operate with supervisory staff while a final decision on transatlantic and transpacific service awaited. Picket lines formed at major terminals after last minute talks reached an impasse.

Charges Reduced On Drug Counts In Bonner County

Three men charged with possession of narcotics had their counts reduced to a generic association with narcotic locations. Bonds for Charles Challender Richard Whigham and Gary R Bartow fell from 3000 to 250 after arraignment. two others faces sale and possession charges. Challender released on the reduced bond. Other arrestees Jonas Banks and James McIntosh remain noted in sheriff records.

Youth Placed On Probation For Parole Violation

Harold Jones an 18 year old Sandpoint youth was placed on two year probation by Judge Dar Cogswell in district court for a parole violation from Coeur d Alene. He has served 57 days of a three year sentence and must return to high school under probation terms. further violations could trigger the full sentence.

Court Case Is Appealed In Hope Tavern Owner Convicted

Frank Murphy a Hope tavern owner was found guilty of selling beer to a minor by a six man jury in District Court. He was fined 300 dollars and sentenced to 20 days in County Jail. His appeal to the State Supreme Court was granted and he remains free on appeal.

An Idaho economic atlas by Dr. Harry H. Caldwell of the University of Idaho highlights the state’s physical and cultural environment. It targets high school civics classes and newcomers, with text and maps on population shifts, agriculture, transportation, and recreation, priced at $2.00 per copy or $1.50 each for orders over 20.

Pocatello Bears Shot After Escape From Zoo Cage

A mother grizzly and her cub escaped from a Pocatello city zoo cage and were shot in front of director Tom Knapp's home. The bears, acquired from Yellowstone last summer, had previously attacked a visitor and will have their skins displayed at the Ross Park zoo replica.
