Teton bids postponed delaying $30 million dam project

The Bureau of Reclamation postponed the Teton Dam prime contract bid opening by at least a month to allow interior department review. About 200 contractors gathered in Idaho Falls before the 10 a.m. deadline as project engineer Robert Robison received the delay notice from W H Keating. Environmental groups filed suit seeking postponement citing environmental impact and economic concerns.

York Raps Sales Tax Spending

Wayne York of the Idaho Education Association criticized Idaho's 1966 sales tax for not improving education funding or reducing local property taxes. He said state aid should rise and that rankings in teacher salaries and expenditures per pupil have fallen from 38th and 39th to 46th in both.

Jackson Warns Of Population Tidal Wave

Senator Henry Jackson warned 150 delegates from six Western states that the West has run out of room for population growth. He urged a national land use policy and long term planning to meet environmental and energy needs, citing Grand Canyon dam debates and potential coal gasification as long term solutions. Boy Scout Drive Announced Here

The Selkirk District kicks off its annual Boy Scout drive led by Drive Chairman Dr. Fred Marineau. About 400 local boys are in scouting and funds will stay in the area to support programs with assistance from Panhandle District. District Chair Jim Tinsman and Dr. Marinella have distributed donation cards and seek volunteers.

Pat Paulsen Announces 1972 Presidential Run in Idaho

Pat Paulsen said he will be a candidate for president in 1972 at a College of Southern Idaho event in Twin Falls. He cited as a reason that $40 remained from his 1968 campaign and he plans to reuse it.

Local Youth Cited Here After Skid on G N Road

A 17 year old Sandpoint youth was cited for inattentive driving after his car skidded 282 feet and rolled onto its side on G N Road also known as Old Baldy Road. Ivan E Lord drove eastbound and failed to negotiate a curve. Deputy Larry Berry said Lord escaped injury.

Four-Wheel Vehicle Ban Affects Harrison and Beehive Lakes Trails

Forest Service restricts four wheel drive on old logging roads used as trails into Harrison and Beehive Lakes. Hikers and riders may continue on the roads which will be water barred to reduce erosion and allow reseeding. The trails access the Selkirk Crest Area under a cooperative Idaho State and Forest Service management effort.
