Five Sandpoint police officers threaten immediate termination of Holt and Piehl unless they are removed from duty. They warn they will work an emergency detail if forced to quit, amid an investigation into mismanagement and alleged irregularities including misused funds and confiscated merchandise following Chief George Elliot's firing.

Snake River Steelhead Fishing Closed by Tri-State Panel

Idaho Washington and Oregon fish and game commissioners close steelhead fishing on the Snake River for Oct 8 to Dec 31 1974. Officials cite a total run under 9 000 this year about 30 percent of normal with nutrient-related water conditions at the dams. The ban covers the Snake River and tributaries to Deerk Creek Bridge near Whitebird and the Clearwater River to Memorial Bridge at Lewiston.

Prison Land Sale Stopped by Idaho Board Decision

The Idaho State Land Department moved to cancel a public auction of endowment fund land tied to the new 13 million prison complex south of Boise. Land Board members approved stopping the sale, with remaining members to decide later. Burglary At Schweitzer Basin Cabin Stolen Guns And Stereo

About $2,000 worth of stereo equipment and firearms were taken from a Schweitzer Basin area cabin owned by Leon Lewis and lived in by Ralph Jones. Entry was gained by knocking down the front door. Missing items included three handguns two rifles two shotguns an amplifier a turntable a reel to reel tape player two speakers a cassette recorder a homemade tape player 70 records and tapes. Bonner County deputies are pursuing two leads in the investigation.

Church Plans Rail Service for Idaho

Senator Frank Church announces a compromise plan to guarantee Amtrak rail passenger service to Idaho within four years. The proposal would require Amtrak to provide rail service to major metropolitan areas across the 48 contiguous states and to phase in the program over four years as conferees resume work on the Amtrak bill.

Paulsen enters Bonner County race as write in candidate

Sandpoint attorney James Paulsen announced his bid for Bonner County prosecuting attorney as a nonpartisan write in. He faces incumbent Dan Featherstone and Democratic nominee Lucinda Weiss in the November 5 election, criticizing past nomination handling and urging focus on felonies and serious cases. Paulsen is currently in Boundary County as prosecuting attorney on a short contract after moving from another state.

Special Prosecutor Expected Tomorrow in Hofmeister Case

A Caldwell attorney is likely to be named as special prosecutor for the June Darlene Hofmeister homicide. District Judge Dar Cogswell said he is 99 percent sure the appointee will accept. if not, two other qualified attorneys will be approached. The move follows Idaho AG’s refusal to appoint a deputy. Republican Wayne Kidwell criticized the AG for delays and inaction.
