Sandpoint High School students conduct mock planning and zoning hearings on annexation using six topic groups and real officials as references. Over 100 Westside property owners were contacted. many oppose taxes while some favor or remain undecided.

Idaho Supreme Court Reopens Intermountain Gas Rate Case

In a 4-1 decision the Idaho Supreme Court set aside the Public Utilities Commission dismissal of Intermountain Gas 1975 request for a 36 million general rate increase and remanded for possible rehearing. Justice Shepard dissented.

Laclede Water Bond Approved by Voters

In Laclede 51 residents voted on a 230000 water bond with 46 yeas and 5 nos. The approval funds a about 450000 project cost for a new system serving about 100 families with half financed by a Farmers Home Administration grant. JUB Engineers nearing plan completion bids to follow and construction expected next spring.

Wilderness Study Area Maps Ready Next Month

National Forest Service identifies 237 roadless areas totaling 9,323,225 acres in its northern region for potential wilderness designation. By mid December, location maps will be available from regional headquarters in Missoula and the Montana and northern Idaho offices. The review followed 19 Montana and Idaho workshops with 3,500 participants. 29,480 acres were deleted and 111,540 acres added across 41 areas. Further reevaluation involves 12 North Dakota and 4 Montana areas totaling 460,620 acres.

Spokane Opera House Won’t Carry Crosby Name

The Spokane Advisory Board voted seven to zero against naming the city opera house for Bing Crosby. Chair John Williams said Crosby’s legacy centered on film and radio rather than opera performances. Councilwoman Margaret Leonard had urged the change after Crosby, a Spokane native, died last month in Spain.

The Sandpoint area city planning meet drew about ten attendees as the final of three hearings on the proposed comprehensive plan. Officials noted the plan extends to the area of impact with equal veto voice for city and county, while the county retains final say on zone changes.
