Briefs Sought In Idaho Man slaughter Hearing

Fifth District Magistrate V K Jeppeson in Hailey Idaho ordered briefs from both sides after a two day preliminary hearing into involuntary manslaughter charges against five people tied to a state sponsored survival training course. The charges stem from the death of a Pocatello boy during the program and the judge will decide whether to bind the five to District Court.

Gov. Cecil D. Andrus announced Maj. Gen. George B. Bennett will retire as adjutant general of the Idaho National Guard effective December 1. Brig. Gen. James Brooks is nominated to major general to replace him, with Col. Gordon Shore slated as brigadier general and Brooks to become chief of staff.

Pend Oreille Vets Burgled Overnight Break-In At Local Vet Clinic

Pend Oreille Vets north of Sandpoint suffered a burglary Wednesday night with $6435 stolen from a cash box. Sheriff Robert Wilcox says entry likely via a window screen removed. The case remains under investigation. A 14-year-old Priest River youth was later charged with Grand Theft involving a firearm after showing a gun at school.

State Sued In Small Claim Over Damaged Motor Home

Emmett resident Paul R. Cooper won a $250 small claims judgment against the state of Idaho in Fourth District Magistrate Court. The case questioned whether the state could be a defendant and who pays if valid, after Cooper claimed $321.54 for repairs from damage on State Highway 14 west of Elk City.
