Merle D Parsley a Sandpoint High School teacher has been named Idaho State Coordinator for the Mountain Plains Education and Economic Development Program Inc The announcement was made in Glasgow Montana by Project Director Dr Robert Hager Parsley will coordinate recruitment job development and needs assessment for Idaho and will be based in Boise The project a national model develops a preschool educational system for families in Idaho Montana Wyoming North Dakota South Dakota and Nebraska Parsley resides in Hope Idaho and has taught in Sandpoint since 1963 He holds a degree from Minot State College and a masters from Utah State University He has served as a State Senator and a State Representative and plans to relocate to Boise soon He called the appointment a lifetime opportunity for an educator.

Gonzaga Sniper Opens Fire on Campus and Is Killed
A gunman fired from a 22 caliber rifle on Gonzaga University campus in Spokane, killing a janitor named Hillary Kunz and wounding four others, including two ROTC students. Police shot the shooter dead. one victim was identified as Thomas C. Brass, 24, of Spokane.

Samaritan Lights Up Rest Home With Auto Headlights
A local good Samaritan kept Sandpoint Manor residents safe during a Wednesday power blackout by directing his car headlights into the building and running the engine for over three hours. Floyd Perks, former Sandpoint Public Works chief, parked at the emergency entrance and sustained the car's motor as the emergency power plant failed.
