Clerk laments low turnout in Sandpont election

City Clerk Dave Easton expressed disappointment over a 71.8 percent turnout, down 4.1 points from 1975. He predicted at least 80 percent, complained of apathy, and warned candidates face abuse as only a fraction of registered voters participated. He noted 1,483 registered voters may be far from the actual eligible voters.

Tallman and White Elected to Clark Fork City Council

Incumbents Paul Tallman and Arthur E. White won four-year terms on the Clark Fork City Council with 58 and 84 votes respectively. Challenger Robert W. Rice was defeated as James A. Masked gunmen rob Pend Oreille Cheese owner’s home

Three masked men forced William Beyer to the floor at his Dufort Road residence Tuesday night. Beyer, 39, owner of Pend Oreille Cheese Co. of Sandpoint, said the intruders demanded the safe combination, tied him, and stole his wallet, silver collection, and cash before fleeing. One suspect remains at large as the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office investigates.

Bonner County School Board keeps umbrella insurance policy

The Bonner County School Board voted to retain a $1 million umbrella policy and approved a $13,000 annual premium. They discussed a 1976 state law on minimum liability limits and noted the district’s coverage exceeds those minimums. The board also addressed a 1975 school bus crash case, potential bus route expansion, and other actions including furniture purchases and educator contract negotiations.

Comprehensive Plan Public Hearings in Sandpoint Tonight

The Planning and Zoning commission chaired by Doug Ward will host a 7:30 p m hearing in City Hall council chambers as part of the three public hearings on Sandpoint's comprehensive plan. A second session is set for next Wednesday at 10 a m, with a third city council session on November 16 at 7 30 p m. The commission will also hold an annexation hearing Thursday at 10 a m in the council chambers, the second of its kind, with a final session planned for November 17 at 7 30 p m before the city council.

Highway District Budget Approved in Sandpoint

Sandpoint Independent Highway District board approved a 1977 78 budget of 148000 with 50000 carried over and 60000 from property tax. Board chair Frank Evans cited mild winters and low road work as factors. Budget includes 45500 for snow removal street maintenance storm sewers and expenses plus 48000 for salaries. It also sets aside 13500 for equipment purchases and contingencies and 12000 for equipment repairs.
