Bonner County Delays Interim Sheriff Appointment

Bonner County commissioners have not yet chosen an interim sheriff to serve June 1 through January 1977 to replace Sheriff Robert Wilcox who resigned effective June 1. Henry Samuels said a decision is needed by Friday. Three candidates face the November election. Hare Guthrie and Schade seek the office on Democratic and Independent tickets.

School District, Bus Driver Settle Civil Claim Out of Court

Bonner County School District 82 and one of its bus drivers agreed to settle a civil claim from Rebecca Funk, a minor, after a bus car crash near Westmond on October 17, 1975. The district pays 3468.58 plus medical expense reimbursement. funds held until Rebecca turns 18, in line with Idaho law.

Longevity pay program triggers concern from Andrus and Kidwell

Idaho Governor Cecil D. Andrus and Attorney General Wayne Kidwell questioned the longevity pay plan for state workers and the method to fund a shortfall of 437,837 dollars. Andrus warned of potential salary-driven push for raises and inequities between employees and top officials. Kidwell objected to shifting operating funds to cover salaries and said legal review was needed. The board voted to fully fund the program with future legislative action to cover the gap.

Sandpoint man charged in burglary and property damage

Albert L Gunter, 32, Sandpoint, arraigned on burglary and malicious injury to property after Bonner County deputy arrested him on two warrants. The alleged burglary at 909 Cedar last September involved a $70 money order theft and broken windows from lumber thrown through them. He is held on a $5,300 bond.

Probationers Free Despite New Crimes Under Supervision

GAO investigators found 45 percent of probationers in Portland Philadelphia Seattle and Phoenix committed new crimes during supervision and half of those were not returned to prison. Spokesman Richard Fogel warned public protection is insufficient and urged reform amid understaffed underfunded systems with weak guidelines.

Planning Zoning Meeting Tonight in Bonner County

The Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission meets at 7 30 p m at the county courthouse to review a conditional use permit for a sheet metal shop four miles north of Sandpoint on IS 9 in Agricultural Suburban district and a taxidermy shop one mile east on Sagle Road. It will also preliminarily review Shults Acres subdivision three miles south of Oldtown on U S Highway 41 with 18 lots ranging two and a half to five and a half acres and a permit for four-plex rental units half a mile from Sandpoint city limits on Lincoln Street.

Idaho Board Studies Denver Competency Testing Plan

Idaho State Board of Education members traveled to Denver to study a high school competency testing plan requiring students to pass basic skill tests before graduation. The approach tests ninth graders in math reading language use and spelling, with retests and extra courses as needed. Only three to four percent fail to meet standards by graduation.

Keith Ericksen, a former science instructor, mentors his son Eric in science through hands on projects. From four monthly meetings they built a crystal radio, a buoyancy study, a wind tunnel, a generator, a tin can rocket, and a light tunnel to demonstrate light and energy.
