Local Girl Wins Outstanding Junior Woman Award at ISU

Carol Ann Ames Bean of Twin Falls Idaho received Idaho State University’s Outstanding Junior Woman of the Year for her student relations maturity graciousness and social tact. She is the daughter of Merle and Ames of Dover. Cecil Carpenter 13 won the Art Prize in the Idaho Federation of Women's Clubs state contest earning $3 and a certificate. He lives with grandparents Kossman in Garfield Bay and plans to be an airplane pilot.

Miss Wylie Receives Local PEO Award

Gwen Wylie was given the local PEO award at Sandpoint High School on Friday May 22. Her name will be engraved on the school plaque. The annual honor recognizes a senior girl for leadership scholarship and responsibility who plans further education.

Committee Okays Postal Wage Raise

The Senate Post Office Committee approved an 8 percent postal pay raise and reforms to modernize the mail service. It rejected administration rate hikes to fund the raises and backed a nine member board of governors and an independent five member rates commission. The postmaster general would be chosen by the governors and serve without cabinet status.

Legion Urges Poppy Purchase for Veterans Aid

The American Legion Auxiliary will offer Memorial Poppies on Thursday May 2. A Legion spokesman urged wearers to show thanks to those who fought for freedom and noted contributions aid veteran rehabilitation and families.

Hadley Wins State and National D A R Awards

Hadley Ted Hadley valedictorian of Sandpoint High won first at the state level and second nationally in the D A R Junior American Citizen Contest. It marks his fourth consecutive national award. a chapter award from St George Farragut Chapter recognized four straight national wins. The contest is open to Idaho youth in grades from sui dervart en through twelfth grade.

Burglars Hit Welding Shop in Kootenai County

The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office investigates a burglary at Squeeks Welding in Kootenai County. Entry was gained by ripping off the rear-door padlock with a lever or bar. Only a small cash amount was taken. the shop makes heavy trailers and small plows and was formerly Smith’s Welding.
