Idaho PUC calls witnesses for a public hearing at the County Courthouse on May 26 to address alleged railroad crossing delays in Sandpoint. The ruling could set a local standard for maximum crossing blockage times with penalties including a $2000 fine and possible arrest of the train conductor.
Arthur Jasman of Sagle was reelected to the Northern Lights board of directors at the Westmond Grange area elections. Russell Bishop of Coolin served as meeting chair with Mrs. Art Miller of Priest Lake as secretary. William T. Nordeen and staff outlined operations and billing for seasonal accounts. prizes were awarded for various items to local residents.
Representative James A. McClure announced a $98 021 education grant to North Idaho College Coeur d Alene for a new general science building. The project total cost is estimated at $851 400.
Robert Sayler, 47, of Sandpoint, died Friday after four days in Holy Family Hospital Spokane from head injuries in a head-on crash a half mile south of Colburn last Monday. Funeral details unavailable at press time.
Glenn R. Baily a 21 year old from Sandpoint sustained injuries when his car rolled into a ditch off Lignite Road in Sagle on Saturday morning. Police report damage to the vehicle estimated at 800 dollars and Baily is in satisfactory condition at Bonner General Hospital.
Stephen F. Arno is promoted to Forester in the Regional Office Missoula Montana effective May 16 1971 announced Harold E Andersen Kaniksu Forest Supervisor Arno moves from Forester position on Newport Ranger District Newport Washington He holds AS BS MS and PhD degrees from Olympic College Washington State University University of Montana and University of Montana respectively.
Weather in Sandpoint today remains fair and warm with a low rain risk. Tonight stays dry and Tuesday adds a 10 percent chance of showers, otherwise mostly sunny and mild.
Idaho DAR announced state winners of the Junior American Citizen Contest led by Idaho State Chairman Mrs Gordon Cordes. Local Primary Division winners include Poster Grade 1 first Steve Kluver second Dana Blackmore third Dane Lange and Celeste Thomas honorable mention. Chris Cordes earned honorable mention in Poetry Grade 4 as national judging proceeds in Washington DC.
A Sandpoint youth Timothy Alan Tope, 18, was listed in satisfactory condition at Bonner General Hospital after a Sunday morning rollover on State Highway 2 near Dover. Deputy John Fisher said Tope was found beneath his car in a partly filled ditch, unconscious, with the driver reporting loss of control on loose gravel. Passenger Jerry Dean Blood, 18, sustained minor lacerations.
Former U S senator and Nuremburg prosecutor Thomas J. Dodd died at 64 after collapsing in his Old Lyme home. Grace Dodd was at his side. burial will be in Pawtucket. Dodd was censured in 1967 for converting funds for personal use. He once called Hess's Spandau Prison case, Hess should be placed in a mental institution.
