Concrete Fill Dumping Called Honest Mistake

A concrete dump at the south end of Euclide Street near the Pend Oreille River was due to a misunderstanding of directions and will be removed. Hatcher Enterprises said the mistake was noticed soon after and plans to pick up the material are underway with city permission to use a fill site elsewhere.

Court Rules Committee Not Entitled To Tapes

A federal appeals court unanimously ruled the Senate Watergate Committee cannot obtain five of President Nixon s secret tapes. The court said the committee showed no vital need to secure the tapes and upheld a lower court’s denial of the subpoenas. The tapes concern Nixon conversations with John W. Dean III in 1973.

Lake Pend Oreille Predicted Rise by Next Monday

A Corps of Engineers forecast says Lake Pend Oreille will rise overall by next Monday, May 27, after dipping this week. The 2,059.4 foot level last Monday may edge higher as inflows and dam operations respond to natural flow conditions.

Memorial Day Services Set at War Memorial Park

Memorial Day services will be held next Monday at War Memorial Park with local veteran groups including Womens Relief Corps World War I Barracks and Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars American Legion and Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans. The program starts at 10 a.m. with prayers by Bishop Earl Noble and Rev Nolan Redmond. A carillon piece will precede the activities and 32 flags will be raised at Pinecrest Cemetery marking an Avenue of Flags for veterans buried there. Plans for a similar project at Lakeside Cemetery are in progress.

County Hires Engineer Louis Vermeer Named First County Engineer

Bonner County commissioners appoint Louis Vermeer 37 of Concord California as the first official county engineer. He will start June 17 after serving as assistant civil engineer in Concord and work previously for the California State Highway Department. Vermeer holds California and Oregon licenses and will seek Idaho licensure. He is a University of Iowa graduate and has a wife and two children. Commissioners noted a tough selection with more than 30 applicants and praised Roy Wise for his help in the search.
