Interior Committee Advances Idaho Alpine Recreation Area

The Senate Interior Committee approved a bill to establish a scenic alpine recreation area in the Sawtooth White Cloud and Boulder Mountains of Idaho. The measure bans new mining and allows condemnation to acquire abandoned mines with compensation. It also calls for a study of Pioneer Mountains for possible National Park status and creates Sawtooth Wilderness within the recreation area. The bill includes reverse condemnation protections and state control of hunting and fishing. If passed, it moves to a House-Senate conference to resolve differences.
