Two Zone 2 4 school board races head to polls

Five candidates compete for two seats in District 82 zones 2 and 4. Zone 2 voters choose Marian Ebbett or Andrew Bain. Zone 4 voters choose Gordon Cordes Ralph Daugherty or incumbent Jack Bopp. Polls open noon and close 8 pm with results after 9 pm.

Pickup With Ammo Dynamite Destroyed By Fire North Of Priest River

A 1973 Chevrolet pickup carrying five sticks of dynamite, boxes of 30.06 and pistol ammo, and about 550 gallons of gasoline burned completely yesterday. McDonald and two companions were returning from Priest Lake when engine trouble led to a stall on Shingle Mill Road. Fire crews were unavailable, and the truck was left to burn after dynamite caps were found in the glove box. The Department of Lands and local pumpers assisted, but only the tires and guard rail remained.

Land Board Moves to Sue Interior Over Heyburn Park Leases

Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus and Attorney General Wayne Kidwell confirmed the state will sue the U S Interior Department to challenge Heyburn State Park leases. The dispute centers on terms of a grant and potential land reversion, with current leases set to expire December 31, 1976, and possible injunctions for current residents during the proceedings.

Idaho presidential primary vote set next Tuesday

With two days to register residents must sign up in Bonner County to vote. Registration closes Wednesday May 19 at 8 PM at the County Clerk’s Courthouse office which will also be open May 22 for absentee voting. Ballots for the primary will be cast 8 AM to 8 PM at listed precinct locations including Sandpoint Courthouse and Priest Lake Community Hall.

Special Assistance Sought for Hearing Impaired Student

Seventeen year old Bill Hoffman in the Bonner County School district has 80 percent hearing loss that blocks participation in activities and class discussions. His inherited hearing aid does little due to poor fit, so lip reading remains essential. His father notes natural speech helps lip readers, and teachers should face students. Hoffman needs understanding, a new fitting aid, and individual attention. school staff have sought funding from agencies without success.

Newport Man Dies In Night Road Crash

A Newport man identified as Menno J Hiebert, 48, died in a single vehicle crash on Spring Valley Road about four and a half miles south of Newport. He was alone in a small pickup, which left the west side of the roadway, struck an embankment and a tree, rolled onto its left side, and he died at Newport hospital. Hiebert worked for Burlington Northern Railroad and delivered newspapers for the Sandpoint Daily Bee.
