Rescue teams fought through smoke and carbon monoxide inside the No. 10 shaft at Kellogg Idaho where 50 miners were trapped 3,700 feet below and 1,700 feet from reach as fresh crews move via a cross tunnel.
The Bonner County Chapter of the American Red Cross begins a benefit drive for Sunshine mine disaster victims. Donations should be sent to Bernice Mortimore at 803 Oak Sandpoint and marked to distinguish from the annual Red Cross drive.
Two C130 aircraft delivered search and rescue equipment to Kellogg Idaho near the Sunshine Mine where 50 miners are trapped. Inflatable bulkheads, battery powered carts, sound powered phones and life listening gear were among the items deployed with Air Force support from Pittsburgh's Allegheny County airport.
Everett Hofmeister of Sandpoint was elected State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus at the statewide convention in Wallace on April 30. He will serve a one year term as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Francis Karel, and will coordinate all Knights activities in Idaho. Other officers elected were State Secretary John Daniker Idaho Falls Treasurer James Vergobbi Kellogg Warden Dick Fuchs Twin Falls and Advocate Richard Henning Twin Falls. Additionally a revenue sharing plan endorsed by the House Ways and Means Committee would deliver Sandpoint about 39076 this year and Bonner County about 197632 for government operations with total local funds around 262187 in the county. Idaho's overall share was projected at 15400000 with 58 million to state government and 96 million to local units. the plan could come to a House vote early this month.
An election on Monday May 8 will choose the Trustee for Zone 5 of Bonner County School District No 82. Incumbent W A Verhei 77 of Sagle faces challengers John R Blugh Old Town and Robert G Klatt Sagle for a three year term. Polls open 12 noon to 8 pm at Blanchard Grange Hall Mdgemere Grange Granite Schoolhouse Idaho Hill Schoolhouse Sagle Schoolhouse Southside Schoolhouse with secret ballot.
Idaho State Mines inspector W W Carl Griner says the 1971 legislature allocated $72 000 to inspect Idaho mines next year, far below his $104 000 request and the governor’s recommendation. He notes the shortfall limits inspector training and staffing for mines such as Sunshine.
Sunshine miner Del Kitchen says safety programs at the Sunshine Mine were extremely poor and no fire drills were held. He notes miners lacked training and resuscitators, but used a canteen sized rebreather to escape. His father and brother died trapped 3,100 feet underground after Tuesday’s fire.
Lake Pend Oreille measured at Sandpoint Marina shows 53.8 feet at 8 a.m. today, up by one foot in the last days.
