Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reports 90 investigated child abuse cases from the Boise office in the last month. Investigators found 48 cases involving neglect and two cases of sexual abuse among the children.
Sandpoint City Council will hold an 8 p.m. public hearing on the 1975 appropriations ordinance approved March 17 totaling 3.65 million dollars. The budget covers mayor and council salaries, city departments, fire, police, water and sewer systems, libraries, parks, street work, and bond interest.
Idaho State Police report Chris A. Gonzales, 17, son of Joyce Gonzales of Sand Point, died when his car failed to negotiate a curve on U.S. 95. The vehicle skidded, struck a guard rail, went over the railing and rocks, flipped end over end, and burned with Gonzales pinned beneath it. The fatal crash occurred near the north end of the Long Bridge.
The National Farmers Organization held direct sales in Midwest City Oklahoma and Kansas City Missouri, moving 13 tons of beef cheese and potatoes to consumers. Prices were lower than retail with beef at 5 percent of a pound tubes for five dollars per 5 pounds, cheese at 1.30 a pound and Idaho potatoes at 10 cents a pound.
US naval transports and contract ships move toward Da Nang under orders to evacuate refugees and avoid combat. The Pentagon seeks compliance with the congressional ban on Indochina warfare while Hanoi rejects cease-fire aid talks. White House cautions that ships would withdraw if fired upon.
Seattle report notes lumber prices may rise due to energy shortages. Nitrogen fertilizer costs, driven by natural gas limits, curb timber growth plans. Studies show helicopter fertilizer boosts growth 15 to 20 percent, with thinning and fertilization increasing yields about 30 percent in seven years.
