City fathers pass a 3.65 million dollar budget after a public hearing that drew only one question from Archie Yager. He challenged funding basis and shared costs with the surrounding Library District while Mayor Les Brown defended allocations and the one time expenditure for a new sewage plant.
Sandpoint firemen seek a written contract after the City Council balked at signing the tentative deal including a ten percent raise. Firemen have called in IFU representation and plan to meet the council again likely Wednesday to resolve the dispute.
A unnamed woman reported possible animal cruelty after a resident left a Wild Meadows home near Blanchard. A pony and a pig were found dead from starvation while two dogs and three pups ate the remains. The suspect is believed to live in Spirit Lake and has not been located.
A federal district court in Boise denied Carl Cletus Bowles' request for an injunction to block his transfer during a pending civil suit alleging constitutional rights violations. Bowles, serving 75 years for kidnapping, escaped an Oregon prison and is wanted in Washington for murder. He seeks access to prison files and a halt to transfers without consent, plus $10,069 in damages. The state may move for summary judgment soon. a hearing is anticipated on several complaints including mail interference.
Boise UPI reports Idaho State Department of Education will be more visible and vocal in supporting public education. New deputy superintendent Jerry Evans, resigning Caldwell school chief, promises leadership, service, and district help. Public Instruction head Roy Truby aims hands on field work with admins and lawmakers.
Bonner County sheriff reports Lillian S. Andrews, 54, from Garfield Bay, missing while driving a 1973 Blazer toward Sand Point from Arlington Washington. She was last seen Saturday with $12,000 and two French Poodles in the vehicle.
