An earthquake felt from Monterey to San Francisco registered magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale. The UC Berkeley seismograph lab traced the center to the ocean off Monterey with no serious damage reported. Residents in Carmel and nearby towns reported strong shaking and moving houses.
