School Board trustees of District 82 will meet twice a month through April due to heavy workload. The first biweekly session occurred Tuesday night with upcoming meetings scheduled for March 14 and April 11 and 25. Two early graduation requests were approved for Linda A. Priest of Clark Fork High School and Harry Landers of Sandpoint High School.
Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney Donald C. Brockett travels to Washington State Penitentiary to inspect conditions. He has criticized alleged drug traffic and plans to urge the Resident Government Council to improve operations. He notes heroin use by inmates signals systemic issues.
The Senate Health, Education and Welfare Committee gave a do pass recommendation to allow school district trustees to shift existing budget funds to handle unforeseen problems. Senator James Stoicheff noted trustees cannot arbitrarily raise the budget.
Lewiston Idaho sues in Second District Court for a declaratory judgement on whether the Lewiston Orchards Fire Protective District can transfer district assets to the city. The Feb 9 meeting authorized a test case to define the district’s legal status, with the city asserting commissioners may sell assets including real property and firefighting equipment to the city.
The board approved next year’s school calendar and a resolution setting election judges. They also authorized the official notice of trustee elections for Zone 5 on May 8, 1972. The panel authorized acoustical tile installation in the New Farmin School wing at an estimated cost of 3940 dollars.
Troy Bussey a 39 year old editor and speaker captivated about 40 Chamber of Commerce members and employees at a day long Elks Club seminar. He compared himself to Dale Carnegie and shared lessons on salesmanship and community representation. His talk traced money circulation and urged a confident personal presentation to boost local commerce.
Idaho inmates John Jessie Rambro and Phillip Mendy who pleaded guilty to robbery and escape last July face up to 20 additional years. Rambro, 18, and Mendy, 31, received five years on the escape counts and up to 15 years for robbery. Judge W E Smith ordered the sentences run consecutive to their current terms.
Idaho Governor Cecil D. Andrus told the Idaho Press Club that a Snake River dam project at Swan Falls and Guffey should benefit the state if economically and environmentally feasible. He spoke as a contract between the state and Idaho Power moves through the legislature, with the Idaho Water Resource Board backing the venture and an interim committee to approve the contract. The plan foresees about 1.5 million dollars per year in state returns, to be prioritized for irrigation in southwestern Idaho. He did not present a counter‑proposal to the State Farm Labor Act and warned he may convene a special session if lawmakers fail to revise parts deemed unconstitutional.
Boise Idaho. The Idaho Senate defeated a proposal to set a 7.50 dollar bounty on coyotes after House approval 44 to 22. Sen. John Peavey urged waiting for the Fish and Game Department to develop its predator control program citing a new director and a federal order banning certain poisons on federal lands. Backers said a trial bounty could be tried for two years despite limited enthusiasm.
Trustees of School District 82 adopted a resolution praising Dr. James Arthurs and his wife for venereal disease education work at Sandpoint Junior High School. The board urged PTO and PTA groups to hire the couple for similar programs in Seventh and Eighth grades in rural schools across the district.
