Bill Tillotson, a longtime resident near Baldy on Trader Mountain, encountered a large mountain lion while cutting timber. He faced the animal for about an hour before it retreated into the brush as a bulldozer operator and another worker called for help. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game will investigate.
A local citizens task force began a county wide campaign to pass a 15 mill plant facilities levy in July. Dale Addington said the funds would equip buildings, buy buses, repay loans, and support safety. The 10 mill levy expires today and a 5 mill levy ends next year. The levy would cost $2 per $100 for one year and $1.50 for four years, with no district funds used.
Deadline extended to 5 p.m. Friday as Sandpaint prepares the July 4 Grand Parade. Don Mitchell expects the event to be the biggest yet with judges starting at 8:30 a.m. and the parade at 10:30 a.m. Entries from community and commercial floats to youth and civic groups organize at designated locations.

The group tours western states en route to Minnesota for a World Food Crisis Conference. The visit left Thurlow pleased with Sandpoint but it was hard to understand the diplomats from many nations. The caravan then headed to Glacier National Park via State Highway 200.
Sharon Kelley told police she lost 180 dollars in twenty dollar bills, possibly in the library parking lot. She said she left her purse on top of her car when leaving the library and found it at home without the bank envelope containing the cash.
Kyle S. Menard, 15, collided with the First Baptist Church around 10 50 p m Wednesday in a church parking lot while spinning tires in Floyd McGee ownership. He drove to City Beach to return the truck and was cited for leaving the scene and license failure. Damage to vehicle about 1500 dollars. Church damage unspecified but described as a brick and steel reinforced wall breach.
A stack of eight track stereo tapes valued at 125 dollars were reported stolen from the cab of a pickup owned by 19 year old Eric F. Greenland of Sandpoint. The truck was parked in the 400 block of South 3rd Avenue, with theft occurring Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
Police report vandals damaged seven trailers and a pickup canopy at Alpine Motors used car lot Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Two taillights and seven windows were broken, likely by BB gun fire, with damage estimated at 400 to 500 dollars.
A 15 year old Clark Fork boy was confined in Bonner County Jail about 10 30 p m Wednesday charged as a minor consuming alcohol in a juvenile holding case authorities said the boy was detained after an alcohol incident.
