Sewage Troubles Hit Hope Idaho Homes On Rocky Slopes

A Panhandle Health District survey in Hope and East Hope Idaho reveals aging septic systems along steep rocky hillsides near Lake Pend Oreille. Four direct discharges, 53 cesspools, 86 septic tank drainfields, and 31 septic tank drywells were found among 194 systems, with soil conditions and a high water table spreading untreated effluent toward the lake.

Cocolalla Lake Sewage Systems Examined In Survey

Panhandle Health District reports permeable soils around Cocolalla Lake allow some effluent to leach into groundwater and the lake. Only one system failed but algae blooms in August and September persist. 48 percent of 135 lots use cesspools or drywells. two steering committees study sewer districts for Johnsons and Kay lakes.

Wall Collapse at Highway 200 Site Near Hope Prompts Federal Probe

A retaining wall built to guard the Hope cemetery along Highway 200 near Hope collapsed last week. Federal highway officials will test repair options after rainfall weakened underlying rock, costing about 50 000 dollars. Engineer Gene Hendrickson said repairs will continue pending further tests to identify the best solution.

Storm Damage Reported In Sandpoint County

A thunderstorm swept Sandpoint area causing outages and minor damage. PP&L logged five transformers burned at Hope Bud Kamloops line down at Kamloops trailer park while Northern Lights noted three small outages in Edgemere. No damage reported within the city. a garage collapse near U.S. 95 was noted but details unclear.
