Sandpoint approves shared cost for university study of city areas

The Sandpoint City Council unanimously agreed to share 250 of the costs for a University of Idaho redesign study of Sand Creek, the city beach, and downtown. The city will cover 250 for two scale models and 12 study books at 7.50 each, with total outlay 850 noted by Bill Nordeen.

Sandpoint OKs Local Improvement District for 22 Streets

The Sandpoint City Council on Monday formed LID No 25 to pave 22 streets including Merton Elm Main Poplar Ella Chestnut Fir Alder Ruth Wake Michigan S Ella Erie Second Third Superior Dearborn Idaho Lake and Fourth Aves with some streets listed in petitions. The measure requires 75 percent council approval or 60 percent resident requests to take effect.

Land Bureau Probes Two Man Made Grassland Fires

The Bureau of Land Management investigates two fires blamed on man action. One blaze near Highway 51 scorched 700 acres of grasslands and sage brush while another 600 acre fire burned Saturday opposite the first site. The latest fire started two miles east of Buruneau and was checked by 14 men and two ground tankers.

Hansen Says Eagle Death Not Deliberate

U.S. Senator Cliff Hansen of Wyoming said it has not been proven to him that stockmen intentionally poisoned eagles in Wyoming. He noted about fifty golden and bald eagles have died since 1951 with most victims poisoned by thallium sulfate while others were shot or electrocuted.

Four Lane Striping Adopted By Council

The Sandpoint City Council approved a four lane striping plan for First Avenue and Cedar Street by a 4-2 vote to speed traffic flow while studying a later one way downtown pattern. Merchants favored a one way system per a University of Idaho study, with a three lane plan as second choice. Police Chief George Elliot backed four lanes citing safe, rapid movement through Penney's corner.

Andrus Orders Cooperation On Drugs In State

Gov. Cecil D. Andrus issues an executive order directing the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy, the Bureau of Drug Control, and the Department of Law Enforcement to cooperate with the Idaho Attorney General’s office. Attorney General Anthony Park will coordinate enforcement of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act as the board seeks federal grants.
