Bonner County Extends Ambulance Contract To 1972

Mexican workers allege tree burying and illegal wages in Priest Lake contract
Six Mexican laborers jailed in Bonner County claim they were brought to Idaho for a Kaniksu National Forest tree planting job at $2 per day, far below the $2.67 hourly contract rate. They say trees were buried to speed work. The contractor is Ruben Baier of Reading California, with 13 federal contracts totaling over $32,000. Wage and Hour Division and Spokane investigators will probe. Forest Service awarded 37 tree-planting contracts this year.

Guardsman Hospitalized After Lounge Skirmish
National Guardsman Thomas J. Mackley age 43 from Burley Idaho was reported doing nicely Monday night in Public Service Hospital from wounds after a skirmish with officer John Norwood at a lounge. Mackley was shot in the arm and leg while approaching the officer with a blackjack. He was on leave from Camp Shelby Mississippi where Idaho guardsmen were training.
