Hormel Plant in Austin Braces for Potential Shut Down
UPI reports in Austin Minnesota the Hormel pork plant employs 2,436 union workers and dominates local life. The facility pumps $2,527 annual per household spending and $6.70 hourly wages while executives fear a shutdown without a new plant or remodel. Labor leader Dick Schaefer warns the Austin plant could close if a new facility is not approved and notes $10-12 million in annual incentive payments to workers.

County Uses Purchase Rights to Shield Farms from Development
Suffolk County, led by County Executive John V. Klein, funds a program to buy development rights from farmers. Farmers keep ownership while land remains for agriculture, with initial purchases covering 3,800 acres and plans to secure 12,000 to 15,000 acres. Klein seeks federal aid and has lobbied in Washington and Montana to advance preservation bills.
