Bonner County Rejects School Levy By Narrow Margin

Bonner County voters rejected a 15 mill 800000 school plant facilities levy by a slim margin with 6.26 percent in favor. Of 2700 voters, 1824 cast yes and 971 no, about a quarter of registered voters. Superintendent Wayne Likens said results would be canvassed through the week and options include another levy or waiting until next year. Heaviest turnout at Washington School in Sandpoint, with high turnout also at Sagle Priest River and Lincoln School. Unofficial results run on page six.

IFG Seeks License Fee Increase

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission proposes higher licenses and permits to boost revenue after a budget shortfall. A 5 dollar jump for resident combined licenses, 5 to 8 for hunting, and 4 to 8 for fishing, plus 50 cent charges on licenses sold by 600 vendors.

City Signs Breakwater Contracts for Sandpoint Project

Sandpoint officials signed agreements with Les Peak Shorty Blood and Moe Ballison to furnish haul and place granular and rip rap fill and install five foot diameter culverts for the breakwater extension into Lake Pend Oreille north of City Beach. The $120 000 project excludes tinhouse work and boat slips with construction expected to start around September under the city as general contractor.

Panhandle Health Board Awards Sandpoint Office Contract

The Panhandle Health Board awards the Sandpoint health office project to Brant Construction of Bonners Ferry after five bids, with Turkey Construction of Spokane as high bidder at 125000. The one story building at Killa and Michigan Streets replaces crowded First Avenue offices and will start soon with completion in 90 to 150 days.

Two Motorcyclists Hurt After Deer Collision on Highway 200

Gary Luckey and Carol Bohara, both of Spokane, were injured when their motorcycles struck a deer near the Pack River bridge on Highway 200. The deer crossed and froze as Luckey rode about 55 mph. They were treated and released at Bonner General Hospital. bike damage was about 250 dollars.

A 17 year old Fontana resident was arrested Tuesday night on possession of a controlled substance. He was released to his father with a promise to appear in court.

Paul L. Auten 26 of Newport was arrested in Newport for assault with a deadly weapon. He posted a $1,000 bond Tuesday and was released to the Bonner County Sheriff's office Monday.

Rifle Fire Damages Nordman Diamond Shake Mill Transformers

A man with a rifle shot out electrical transformers feeding the Diamond shake mill in Nordman around 11:15 pm Tuesday. He fired six rounds from a .30-30 rifle, causing about $1,500 damage before fleeing. New transformers were installed this morning.

Karl Berg Eulogized as Sandpoint Boxing Godfather

Karl Rudolph Berg 72 known as Sandpoint boxing godfather died in a Hayden Lake area crash nearly two weeks earlier. The longtime coach shaped Sandpoint Elks Boxing Club for about 40 years guiding youngsters with honesty and leadership. Friends remember his dedication and impact as coaches and fighters recall his early ring battles with notable opponents. Berg born February 3 1905 in Rhinegeheim Germany rose from a fragile wrist injury to a storied boxing life in Idaho and beyond.
