Drunk Driver Program Gets Underway
Boise reports 26 new state police cars and 26 officers funded by a 2.1 million federal grant to Idaho for a two year Alcohol Safety Action Program. Director L. Cotty Lowry said the patrols will mainly detect and apprehend drunk drivers and also handle other duties. Capt. Marvin Snyder will direct the force, which will operate statewide as a warning to potential offenders.

Death Takes Supreme Court Judge Givens
Funeral services pending for Raymond L. Givens retired Idaho supreme court justice who served 29 years on the state’s highest court. Givens died Saturday at age 89 born in Salem Oregon earned law degree in 1909 from the University of Denver and practiced in Boise. He held roles as Ada County Prosecuting Attorney Idaho House member assistant attorney general and district judge before joining the supreme court in 1925.

Idaho Property Tax Increase Sparks Idaho County Shifts
Idaho property taxes rose from 62.3 million in 1960 to 108.7 million in 1971, a 74 percent jump. Max Yost of Associated Taxpayers of Idaho notes income and corporate taxes climbed more, with county changes from a 3 percent drop in Lemhi to a 203 percent rise in Blaine. City totals added 10 to 18.1 million.

Couple Killed in Car Collision Near Coeur d Alene
Two Coeur d Alene residents Earl B. Jones 73 and Evelyn R. Jones 69 died in a noon Friday two car crash involving a Wapato Washington driver. The couple were longtime Schweitzer Basin skiers and residents of Sandpoint part of each winter. Funeral services were pending with Yates Funeral Home.

Parks Board to Appeal Malad Water Rights denial
The Parks and Recreation department will appeal the Idaho Water Administration denial of water rights to Malad Canyon Springs. Attorney General W Anthony Park will handle the appeal to the State Supreme Court. The Sandpoint July 21 Park Board meeting reviewed a Revenue Generation proposal and heard praise for the Land and Water Conservation program and staff.
