Onassis Offers Self for Hijacked Olympic Flight

Aristotle Onassis offered to trade himself for 58 hostages aboard an Olympic Airlines jet hijacked by six Arabs. He failed to sway the gunmen after a seven hour stand off, as passengers were released in exchange for a government pledge to free seven Arab prisoners. Deputy Premier Pattakos set a August 22 deadline for the prisoners to leave Greece, with two to stand trial for a deadly bombing against El Al offices last November. Onassis later signed a pledge promising cooperation to secure the remaining captors’ release.
