Doors Move Raises Problems For Aluminum Can Recycling Center

One year after opening in Sandpoint the aluminum can recycling center may expand or discontinue operations. Steve Klatt started the venture and has been buying aluminum cans and Coors bottles from locals, with an agreement that Coors would end May but was extended through summer. Prices are 15 cents per pound for aluminum and a penny per Coors bottle, with alternative options like direct selling to Kaiser possible but likely lower rates. Klatt considers paper recycling as a future but requires investment. demand has grown from 3 to 10 dollars per ton for paper. Last Saturday nearly a ton of cans were collected, and hours are Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local distributors pay varying rates for bottles or cans, affecting the center’s future.
