Fair and hot weather continues in Sandpoint and nearby areas with possible afternoon and evening thundershowers. Winds gust to 15 mph near storms, 20 percent rain chance through Saturday. Highs around 100 today, 95 tomorrow, lows near 65 tonight.

Sandpoint Council Eyes Citizen Committees To Amend Growth Plan

The Sandpoint City Council plans to form about six committees of five to seven members from local residents to review and amend the proposed comprehensive growth plan. After committee work, chairs will meet with the Planning and Zoning Commission to complete the process. The meeting also considers water main bids, sewer sealing, downtown parking lot paving, and committee reports.

Fire Danger Rises to High in Inland Northwest Forests

UPI reports fire danger listed as high in the Clearwater of Northern Idaho the Okanogan Umatilla and Wenatchee forests amid a hot spell. Lightning caused spot fires were recorded in several forests including two in Clearwater six in Okanogan and seven in Umatilla across Oregon Washington and Idaho.

License Sales Down in Idaho Fish and Game Reports

Idaho Fish and Game Commission reported six month sales of licenses fell 37 497 from a year ago. Of 163 934 licenses sold so far, 139 365 went to residents and 24 569 to non residents. Commission and staff blamed a bad spring and expect improvement. Chairman Jack Hemmingway noted Sun Valley vendors cannot meet demand. A recodification plan reduces Idaho fish and game law chapters from 41 to 21 and cuts words by about one third.

Ex-Cellmate Testifies Young Admitted Bombing Judge

In Pasco, Ricky Young's former cellmate David McKinney testified Young admitted mailing the bomb that killed Judge James Lawless. McKinney, 25, said Young claimed responsibility after discussing his jail term and indicated others were involved. The judge ruled the testimony admissible for jury consideration.

Train Hits Car. Spokane Line Crashes at Morton

No one injured as a Spokane International train struck a Volkswagen driven by Vicki Lynn Galloway at Dufort Road crossing Morton. The vehicle rolled onto the tracks while parked on an incline, was knocked about 70 feet by the impact, and listed as a total loss.

Wheat Fire Destroys 80,000 Bushels Near Lind Washington

A lightning sparked blaze late Wednesday into Thursday burned about 2 000 acres west of Lind destroying some 80 000 bushels of wheat on at least five farms. Officials estimate losses at 250 000 dollars.

Water Main Burst Floods Spokane Downtown

A 16 inch cast iron water main burst in Spokane's central business district at 6:50 a.m. flooding several blocks and the city library area. Water reached two feet deep over streets. sewer capacity overflowed. By 9 a.m. cleanup was underway and repairs planned. about a dozen downtown businesses lost water service until noon. Librarian Betty Bender reported about 100 reference volumes damaged.
