Priest River float wins Sandpoint parade sweepstakes

Thousands watched as Priest River Community float driven by Paul Branham earned the Sandpoint Lions Club community float award and the overall sweepstakes honors in the 1975 Independence Day parade amid bicentennial costumes and sunny skies. The entry featured Miss Priest River Kathleen Branham and Princesses Trudy Davaz and Sandy Bryan. Grand Marshal Dr. Helen E. Peterson led more than 73 entries, with Mountain Mavericks 4-H Club winning the horse category and United Methodist Church claiming the civic award in a bicentennial theme. Harold Miller won in the antique category for a wood powered steam engine and C. Tucker took the logging award.

Lightning Sparks Pack River Fire in Bonner County

Lightning storms caused 79 fires across the Pacific Northwest over the weekend. One quarter acre blaze along Hell Roaring Creek in the upper Pack River drainage near Bonner County was controlled. Fire crews from the Forest Service and Idaho Department of Public Lands fought the timbered fire.

Grand Jury Recessed in Hofmeister Homicide Probe

The grand jury investigating the Hofmeister homicide will not reconvene until July 14, per County Clerk Doris Kenney. The panel, which had planned to hear three witnesses, is probing the death of June Hofmeister found in a wrecked pickup near the Schweitzer Cutoff Ad. An autopsy found she was strangled after a head blow.

Sandpoint Declares Open Burning Ban Across City

Fire Chief Wade Brown announced a city wide ban on all open burning within Sandpoint city limits. The rule takes effect today to curb fire risk during the dry summer months with limited daytime burning allowed only in approved incinerators or barrels under guard and with a hose nearby. Special permits for controlled burns are available at the Sandpoint Fire Department.

Pony Express Trail Ride to Transport Bicentennial Scrolls

Riders from Bonner and Kootenai Counties will cover about 60 miles tomorrow to move local Bicentennial scrolls to Coeur d'Alene. The relay begins at dawn led by Ed Hawkins, with ceremonies at a south end bridge, color presentations, and remarks by Merle Parsley for Gov. Andrus.

Car hits garbage truck after cyclist and stop sign

EPA boosts grant to Southside Water District

The Southside Water and Sewer District gains a $5,250 increase from the Environmental Protection Agency, raising total EPA funds for building treatment works, interceptor and outfall sewers to $191,250 as announced by Sen. James A. McClure.
