Government gold auction draws heavy bidding in Washington
Speculators and businessmen flooded the Treasury bullion sale with hundreds of last minute offers for 500000 ounces of government gold. About 750 bidders competed as the London gold price hovered around 166 dollars per ounce. In Washington seven GSA officials opened sealed bids while auctioneer George Jamison announced each offer. Also, Air Force Lt. Gen. Daniel James Jr. was nominated to become a four star general, the first black to reach that rank in any service.
