Stoicheff pushes bill to end grocery sales tax in Idaho

Idaho Senator James Stoicheff told Bonners Ferry AARP members he will introduce a 1974 legislature bill to eliminate the sales tax on groceries, arguing the tax is unfair to low income families. Boundary County residents push to recall Sheriff Chris Ketner with near 300 signatures collected toward 620 needed, aiming for 1,000. Lakeside Motel Fire Confined to One Unit

Early morning blaze at the Lakeside Motel 106 Bridge was controlled in minutes and limited to one living unit. No injuries occurred. Firefighters from Sandpoint with Chief Wade Brown investigated the unattended kettle cause while an employee from Pacific Power and Light aided in awakening management.

Sportsmen Urge NRA Safety Course for Idaho Licenses

The Bonner County Sportsmen’s Association backed a resolution urging the Idaho Wildlife Federation to support making a National Rifle Association gun safety course a minimum requirement for first time hunting licenses in Idaho. Opponents argue already too much legislation restricts Americans. The group also opposed state control of big game seasons, preferring Fish and Game Department oversight. Paul Pecukonis was elected president with Curt Bailey as vice president and Ozzie Roos as treasurer. Medicare Premium Rise Planned for July

The Medicare monthly premium will increase on July 1 from 6.30 to 6.70 for about 22.5 million aged and disabled beneficiaries. The rise funds continued coverage under Part B including doctor and certain osteopathic and allied services, with funds covering most costs after a $60 yearly deductible and 20 percent coinsurance.

Bonner County School District Opens Monday

Superintendent Dr Wayne E Likens confirms Bonner County School District 82 will open Monday January 7 despite rumors of a delay. The school board moved opening day from January 3 to January 7 at a December meeting and extended the 1973-74 term to June 7 with daylight saving times starting January 6 at 2 a.m.
