Schweitzer Basin manager Sam Wormington downplayed holiday ski thefts, noting they are not more severe than typical. He advised skiers to split gear and avoid lockers, cited ongoing pole thefts, and mentioned possible car searches at the hill’s bottom on private Schweitzer Corporation property.
Bonner County Sheriff Bob Wilcox says ski thefts are rarely recovered because skiers lack serial numbers and many items are too low in value for NCIC. Police chief Richard Abbott notes thefts are not a problem in Sandpoint despite many visitors, with most losses for insurance purposes.
A Boise spokesman said emergency regulations may be needed to implement Idaho's Sunshine in the initiative. Officials cite ambiguities in lobbyist registration and campaign finance reporting rules and may seek a legislative revision. Twenty five paid lobbyists had registered after the initiative took effect last year.
Richard Wilson began heading the Sandpoint East Bonner County Free Library System January 1. The Board accepted the resignation of Ann Cordes effective December 31 after four years of service. Cordes led artist demonstrations and summer programs and helped establish the county library district. The new director holds a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Iowa and a BA in History and Social Science from Graceland College. He previously worked as a library assistant in Nez Perce County and at Graceland College. His parents live in Lewiston. He enjoys tennis and water skiing in the Sandpoint summer.
Four former White House aides were found guilty yesterday and will appeal the federal court decision. They plan to challenge the ruling on the grounds that former President Nixon's testimony was not available. The Daily Bee notes profiles of the four aides on Page 8.
Mayor Les Brown proclaims January as Alien Address Report Month urging citizens and officials to assist aliens in reporting addresses to the Post Office or INS offices. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 requires most aliens in the United States to report their addresses each January.
Sheriff Robert Wilcox reports additional crashes on icy county roads since Tuesday with no injuries. Brian R. West, 18, Plummer, caused $250 damage after sliding from a parked car on Lakeshore Drive and hitting another vehicle in a ditch. Jim Berry, 18, Sandpoint, wrecked New Year’s Day on Westmond Road, totaling $350 to his car and $450 to a second vehicle.
Representative Orval Hansen announced the Atomic Energy Commission will designate about 500000 acres of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory as a national environmental research park. The move aims to provide facilities and data to scientists and environmental groups and may be expedited for action before 1974 end. The Idaho park would be the second such site after Savannah River, with access to institutions like the University of Idaho and other Idaho colleges.
Two of eight guards who walked off during a prison uprising in Washington state have resigned. Six others returned to work as riot-trained guards freed hostages in a two hour revolt that injured two nurses and led to searches for drugs and weapons.
