Elderly couple drowns ice fishing on MacArthur Lake

William J. Elston 76 and Trudy Elston 71 died after falling through thin ice on MacArthur Lake near Boundary County. Search teams from Highway Department and county deputies located them Sunday at about 12:30 in six feet of water after their car was found abandoned. Fresh snowfall concealed tracks and hindered the rescue. The Elstons were longtime visitors to the lake and likely fell through while returning to their car.

Lawsuit Seeks Damages Over Land Sale Easement

Nearly half a million dollars in damages are sought in a Bonner County breach of contract suit. Gordon and Roberta Dolan of Mountain View California accuse Maude G Bowman Geaudreau of failing to disclose a neighbor’s easement flooding parts of five parcels along Blanchard Creek. The Dolans say the discovery caused lost sales and made loan payments impossible. They seek 230000 for two lost sales, 8000 in real estate commissions, and 20000 in punitive damages.

Regional effort eyed for noxious weed control in Idaho

Northern Idaho officials and University of Idaho Extension met at the Bonner County Courthouse to plan a regional approach to noxious weed management. Tansy knapweed and other species were named, with a March 23 meeting set at Sand Point Community Hall to organize a coordinated program led by Eugene Loss.

Stasis NTS Youths Arrested For Vehicle Damage

Two Sandpoint youths suspected of damaging an Idaho State Police car were arrested late Friday night and charged with malicious destruction of property. They allegedly broke the blue light window mirror and spotlight lens, causing 350 to 400 dollars in damage before being apprehended and released to their parents.

Railroad officials report two vandalism incidents at the Sand Creek bridge signals with at least 10 holes shot in lights across two dates. A broken library window in Sandpoint was found Saturday morning with a snowball inside the north-side room.

Unattended Car Struck By Train Near Bonners Ferry

A car parked on Burlington Northern tracks 14 miles south of Bonners Ferry was hit by a train at about 5 15 a.m. Friday. The owner, Ronald M. Elsey 42 Naples, apparently walked away leaving the vehicle on the track. Damage estimated at 3500 dollars.

Snow totals rise at Schweitzer Ski Basin Weekend

Snow fell nearly a foot at Schweitzer Ski Basin drawing skiers from the Northwest. A spokesperson reports two inches Friday eight inches Saturday and a half inch Sunday. Chairs one four and five and T-bar three operate while conditions last.
