Idaho House mulls ERA rescission by majority rule

Proponents of rescinding ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment pushed the measure from the State Affairs Committee on a 37 to 32 tally. A floor vote then fell 33 to 37, prompting further action this week as leadership weighs whether a simple or two thirds majority is required to overturn ratification in the Idaho House.

Winter Carnival Winners Named

The second annual Winter Carnival in Sandpoint concluded with Mrs Norma Pedler winning a $100 savings bond as the badge draw. The Idaho Specialty Shop ski team captured the traveling trophy at Schweitzer Basin with a 90.1 second combined time, edging North Country by .4 seconds. Jim Olsen led slalom with 16.7 seconds, followed by Danny Farmin at 16.8, while Alpine Shop and several local businesses posted race times. Schweitzer Snow Sculpture winners included Jay Mack for 19 and over, Tina Hammacker 13-18, and Dawn Irgens 7-12. John Bonar won a ski pole prize for 7 and under.

Burglary Suspects Nabbed In Bonner County

An adult and a juvenile are in custody at the Bonner County jail after city police arrested them for four burglaries and property damage over recent days. Leonard T. Tennent 19 of Sandpoint faces two counts of first degree burglary for M&J Food City and Kwik Stop Dairy thefts. A juvenile faces three counts of first degree burglary for Kwik Stop Dairy Agape Christian Book Store and Army Surplus Store thefts plus malicious injury to property for police car headlamp damage. Another juvenile connected to the police car incident and two burglaries faces forthcoming charges. In a separate incident four juveniles were detained after windows were broken at Bill Gill’s Mobile Self Service TV and Lakeshore Motors using a sling shot.

Andrus vetoes rebate despite calls for relief

The Idaho House narrowly sustained Gov Cecil D Andrus veto of a five dollar per person rebate on 1974 state income taxes. Supporters argued surplus funds justify relief while opponents cited administrative cost and timing with highway projects.

65 Laid Off By Railroad

Pocatello Idaho unions plan to lay off 65 railroad workers at closing time Wednesday. The cut raises three month total to 249 layoffs with December and January losses of 17 and 167 respectively. Most affected work in the car repair department.
