A proposed 3 684 000 dollar city budget will be reviewed by the Sandpoint city council Monday night with a public hearing to seek consensus on proposed allocations. The budget includes over 2 5 million in uncommitted funds from federal grants not yet finalized.
City of Sandpoint and its garbage contractor are urged to bid for future sanitation work. An Idaho Code rule requires bids for services over 5,000 dollars. committee backs bids and a written contract. Alternative is city operation of its own trucks. Committee also recommends vending machines for blind residents in City Hall.
Idaho Water Resources Director Keith Higginson warned state officials that a pending disaster in water and energy will hit this summer and winter. Gov. Evans urged conservation and preventive action, forming an Idaho Drought Committee to coordinate cross-agency relief and plan regional strategies with western governors in Denver.
Firefighters rushed to a Pacific Power and Light substation at Main and Division at 12:40 p.m. Thursday. An official said an electrical short caused a transformer to burn but did not disrupt service. Replacement cost was about $500.
Two cars collided at the intersection of 1st and Main on Thursday at 3 10 p m. Leslie G Scott 21 Sand Point swerved to avoid a parked vehicle and crossed the center of Ast Ave striking Craig A Bloom 19 Sandpoint. Bloom’s car sustained 350 in damage while Scott’s vehicle had no damage.
Schweitzer Ski Basin reported three to four inches of new snow on Thursday and all lifts are scheduled to operate this weekend. A basin spokesman said conditions are good with a few rocks visible and more snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow.
The Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce sponsors its annual Washington's Birthday sale from February 17 to 19. Merchants committee chairman Tom Greger says participating businesses will offer many items at reduced prices.
The Idaho Senate refused to confirm Mathew Mullaney of Boise to the Public Utilities Commission. The vote was 14-21 against confirmation after the State Affairs Committee recommended non confirmation. Mullaney described as environmentalist and bullheaded during debate. Kosterman’s confirmation to the Idaho Horse Racing Commission was still pending after noon recess.
The State Transportation Board announced plans to tour northern Idaho in May to meet the Washington State Highway Commission and inspect the forest highway system with U S Forest Service personnel. The board has conducted three yearly tours since the early 1960s.
Idaho Senate leadership members participated in respiratory tests at the Statehouse as part of a lung capacity study by the Idaho Lung Association. James Risch showed the strongest performance among four tested, with results influenced by age height and weight.
Bonner County commissioners will scrutinize the nine month 4.7 million budget on Monday at the courthouse as they finalize 1977 expenditures under a new fiscal year system. Public hearing opens at 10 a.m. with the budget then open through the week prior to final approval.
