Lost Skiers Safe After Long Vigil

Two 16-year-old Sandpoint boys, Todd McCormick and Dan Hart, were found safe at 2:24 a.m. after going missing during a cross country ski trip from Schweitzer Ski Resort to Baldy Mountain Monday. A search involving about 40 people from the Winter Riders Snowmobile Club and Schweitzer Ski Patrol located them near Baldy Road, where they had sheltered overnight and were cold but unharmed.

Homicide case gear toward trial in Hofmeister death

Bonner County investigators led by Chief Deputy Dave Hare say June Hofmeister death will go to trial. The body was found in a wrecked pickup July 16, with scenes and evidence questioned after police say the vehicle was not treated as a crime scene. Tests by local and Spokane authorities with Special Prosecutor Thomas Frost continue as re interviews address past testimony.

Earthquake May Have Felt In Sandpoint from Kalispell Tremor

An earthquake centered six miles southeast of Kalispell Montana and rated 5.0 on the Richter scale may have been felt in Sandpoint. Newport Observatory chief Leonard Kerry said the quake occurred at 5 33 p m local time and the tremor lasted about ten seconds with very slight effects. A later report of a tremor at 10 30 p m in Sandpoint is noted, while Kalispell reported little damage and a power substation transformer bank was out for 19 minutes. Weather and utility outages followed strong winds in the area as Northern Lights and Pacific Power and Light reported minor outages from felled trees.

Legislative Watchdog Resolution Aims to Scrutinize State Board

A bill to form a 14 member legislative watchdog committee to probe State Board of Education policies and practices is expected this week in the Idaho House. The panel would study programs at Idaho State University and University of Idaho, nursing education, private school funds, degree programs, student ratios, and the Statewide Information System and could propose funding measures. The temporary panel would exist until March 3 with members from both chambers and key leadership, including Sen James Ellsworth and Reps Allan Larsen and Kurt Johnson. Weather notes show Coeur d Alene and Sandpoint with variable clouds and light snow flurries through Wednesday.

Schools Shut Down Early in Sandpoint Hope and Clark Fork

Snow drift on county roads forced early dismissal in the Sandpoint Hope and Clark Fork area. A school district spokesman said roads could not be kept open and students were sent home shortly after noon.

Water Quality Hearing Set In Idaho Plan

The Panhandle Planning and Development Council is proposed as the agency to develop an area wide water quality plan for northern Idaho with public hearings this week. Meetings are at the Community Hall at 7:30 p m and tonight in Coeur d Alene. If chosen PPDC would oversee a two year study covering Boundary Bonner Kootenai Shoshone and Benewah counties and the drainage basins including Coeur d Alene Priest and Pend Oreille lakes. Federal funds will cover all costs and final designation rests with Gov Cecil Andrus.

Jobs and Benefit Response in Bonner County Under CETA

The Dept of Employment reports 20 of about 30 CETAfunded job openings filled in Bonner County under CETA. A $400000 northern Idaho allocation prioritizes counties with Bonner having the highest area unemployment at 16.5 percent. About 200 have qualified for SUA and extended benefits claims rose to 100 last week.
