Sludge Dumped Along Sand Creek Near Chamber Center

Three thousand gallons of treated sewage sludge were dumped on the frozen Sand Creek bank near the Chamber of Commerce site to be used as lawn fertilizer. Health officials warned of potential water contamination and urged cleanup and winter storage. a state engineer will assess, with plans for soil cover or storage lagoons.

Northside Fire Chief Rebutts Water Outage Charge

Northside Fire Chief Robert Lyons rebutted claims by county agent Joe Swendig that the Northside department could not drown a small bonfire. Lyons cited a Surveying and Rating Bureau letter denying substandard status and highlighted enhanced water capacity at the Bonners Ferry district fairgrounds, including tanks and pumps totaling several thousand gallons per minute. He argued Northside’s equipment, including a 1000 gpm truck and a 750 gpm unit, outperforms Sandpoint city capacity and referenced a prior 1.5 million dollar fire at the Pacific Gas and Electric Building fought with 750 gpm.

Speakers warned demand growth may outpace supply, with environmental lawsuits delaying transmission lines and plants. Conservation is vital but not a total answer as major plants face long build times and ongoing court battles.

Prisoner Wanted in Texas Extradition Case

The state seeks extradition of Michael J. Lingelbach held at Bonner County Jail on burglary auto theft armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon charges. Lingelbach aka Gary Eicher was arrested Jan 22 by Kootenai County deputies in a Kelso Lake robbery attack on Tom Paylor. unknown if he will contest extradition. Campgrounds To Remain Open In Sandpoint Area Despite Cuts

Panhandle Forest Service officials say most campgrounds in the Sandpoint district will stay open this summer despite a proposed up to 30 percent budget cut. Garfield Bay may close. officials anticipate continuing seasonal staffing constraints and possible reduced services to keep parks operating.
