Statistics released today by Kaniksu Forest Personnel Officer Jim Pierce show unemployed persons and students account for over 80 percent of individuals with re employment rights. The measure affects consideration for US Forest Service seasonal jobs in 1972 amid wage freezes and USDA cutbacks.
The Job Area notes that ten percent is in effect and no new applications will be accepted this year. Last year the Personnel Department reported over 2000 applications received. Officials say the high volume prevented timely processing for many, with some re employable applicants unable to start before August. Unemployed persons comprise the remainder.
Pierce disclosed that 310 personnel hold re employment rights with 150 being re employed, 114 students, 25 temporary part time workers and 21 teachers. The group includes 75 unemployed 43 students 17 teachers and three others. Kaniksu officials say not all 310 can be used this year due to cuts and policy.
Selective Service said over 100000 men with low lottery numbers may escape induction in early 1972 if no draft calls are made in January to March. About 90000 born in 1951 with deferments or college losses, and 10000 born in 1950 or earlier, plus college students 20 years or older, could avoid service if they lose deferments by December 31. Defense Secretary Laird noted no January calls and possible none.
National Weather Service records indicate Boise has seen colder conditions and higher snowfall this December than any December since the late 1800s, surpassing long term averages for Idaho.
Two Priest River brothers James E. Montgomery and Virgil R. Montgomery were arrested after twin searches of their residences yielded tools and equipment identified with local burglaries. Deputy Bastion assisted by Chief Mitchell and Officer Nelson conducted the raids. both are jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing and charged with burglary tied to September thefts.
Boise IRS director Calvin Wright said travel costs for commuting to remote area work sites such as the Gay Mines Operation near Fort Hall and the Dworshak Dam are non deductible on federal income tax returns. He cited federal court rulings that classify commuting costs as personal expenses.
A two car collision last night left Joan Lee Minch 33 Sandpoint cited for driving while under the influence after her vehicle failed to yield at a stop sign. Passengers Kelly and Knaggs sustained minor injuries and both cars sustained damage estimates of 300 and 200 dollars respectively.

Climb stalls amid 80 degree below zero chill, high winds and heavy snow with avalanche danger noted by Ranger Wayne Welch. The party aims to reach the 13,766-foot summit on New Year’s Day and dig snow caves at the 12,000-foot level before the final 1,700-foot ascent.
