Health care panel endorses a certificate of need plan in Idaho as part of state energy and welfare policy. Gov. John Evans supports it in the State of the State address to the 1978 Legislature. Idaho risks federal penalties and funding losses if the program is not adopted.
The US Forest Service seeks public comments on a proposed 260 acre Bottle Lake addition to the Teepee Creek Research Natural Area near Priest Lake in Bonner County Idaho. Alternatives include designating as a Research Natural Area Natural History Area or leaving it open to mineral entry timber harvest and recreation. Comments due Feb 1.
Bonner County deputies arrested Bruce Martin and George Hunter after they allegedly robbed 15 year old Greg Maynes of Edmonton of 108 dollars at knifepoint. Maynes, left with minor throat scratch and bruises, identified the suspects after a ride from them to Baldy Road. Martin posted 5000 dollar bond and was released. Hunter also posted 5000 dollar bond after arrest at Cedar Street.
Three collisions on the Long Bridge over Lake Pend Oreille left five vehicles involved. Frank Willfird of Fairbanks Alaska and William M. Kinter of Sage were in the center span crash. Kinter stopped to help, another driver fled after striking his car, and a third collision occurred 80 feet south. Police reported no injuries.
Lewiston School District parts ways with 13 buses as officials debate widening seat rows to meet a federal standard. Critics say knee to knee space exceeds 20 inches for high school students, reducing capacity and raising costs. An Idaho official cautions wider spacing may violate the standard’s intent.
State Sen. Kermit V. Kiebert of Hope and Reps. Marion Davidson of Bonners Ferry and Don Maynard of Clark Fork will attend an open forum at Sandpoint Community Hall tonight at 7 30 p.m. Citizens may ask about issues facing the 1978 legislative session. All three lawmakers are Democrats and will discuss committee work.
