Collision Injures Idaho Youth in Head-On Crash
A 20 year old from Samuels Idaho was hospitalized in critical condition after a head on collision with a state landing truck on Fifth Street near M-1 Market in Sandpoint. Rodney P Kamp 20 of Samuels drove north at high speed losing control and crashing into the truck driven by Earl A Bohrn 33 of Sandpoint who was not injured. Kamp was transported to Bonner General Hospital Sandpoint then moved to Holy Family Hospital Spokane. No further update available at press time.

Mendle Rivers Dies After Heart Surgery
Mendle Rivers died after open heart surgery in December at University of Alabama Hospital. The 65 year old South Carolina Democrat and chairman of the House Armed Services Committee had undergone a successful valve replacement, but heart failure returned leading to death early Monday. Funeral arrangements were set for Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston with burial near his parents in St. Stephen. President Nixon called Rivers a trusted ally and patriot. Edward Hebert will succeed Rivers as armed services chairman and vows no immediate changes in committee direction.

Sandpoint police report two church burglaries on Christmas Day with minor damage. At the Methodist Church on Fourth Street a 35 mm camera and an electronic flash unit were stolen. the Presbyterian Church reportedly had no missing items. Entry was gained by forcing door locks in both cases.

Two Suspects Out On Bond In Dover Burglary
Wally Grabenstein aged 19 of Hope Idaho and Vince Casper aged 18 of Spokane were released on $1000 bonds posted by a relative. They were charged with first degree burglary in the Les Peak Paving Company case after Spokane teletype serials matched by Bonner County Sheriff's Office clerk Diana Moore. Sheriff Wilcox said Chief Deputy Howard Scott obtained the pair from Spokane authorities and a Sandpoint judge issued the warrant. no trial date is set.

Camper Burns Injures 80-Year-Old Man In Sandpoint Fire
An 80 year-old Sandpoint man, Fred Briggs, was found seated in a nearby car as his self-built camper behind Dr. Fred Marienau’s medical offices burned. Fire crews reported he was in shock. the camper, living unit, was a total loss. Briggs was treated and listed in good condition at Bonner General Hospital. Fire officials cite an overheated wood stove atop the camper as the probable cause. An unnamed source noted Briggs was not an official caretaker but enjoyed being near his doctor.
