Fire kills at Christmas party at Chase's Rest Home
In Le Goulds near St John’s Newfoundland a Christmas party at Chase's Rest Home ended in a blaze. Firemen found victims including an 18 year old woman and a 16 year old boy among the charred rubble. Survivors include the caretaker Lou Dunphy his wife Dorothy and their children. Dunphy injured his burns and his wife hospitalized in shock. RCMP said no further bodies were expected.

Lumber production and shipments rise in week ending Dec 18
Portland Oregon based Western Wood Products Association reports production for the week totaled 189 million board feet up from 170 million last year while shipments reached 198 million versus 180 million. Orders fell to 102 million board feet from 108 million led by weaker demand though year to date figures show orders at 111 percent of 1973, shipments 113 percent and production 114 percent.

Weekend Icy Road Crashes Cause Multiple Minor Injuries
Several weekend incidents on icy Idaho roads led to two car crashes with minor injuries. In Priest River a dump truck driver, Harry Thomas aged 55 of Laclede, was rear ended while preparing to move after stopping to clean his windshield. Penny Miller, 18, Bonners Ferry, sustained minor injuries. Vehicle damages were about 1200 for Miller and negligible for Thomas. Nearby in Kootenai Joan Burrus, 19, of Laclede, lost control near 2:30 p.m. Friday, rolled but stayed on wheels, with about 800 damage. Jesse Edward Elvester, 18, Sandpoint, skidded into a ditch near Pine Street Loop, 300 damage. Robert M. Plaster, 14, Sadgle, hit a parked car on Euclid Street. damage 500 to Plaster and 300 to Richard L. Foster’s parked car. Simon Feist, 24, Sandpoint, veered onto the right shoulder on Garfield Bay Road, 350 damage. Julie Stockdale, Sandpoint, reported unknown vehicle struck her parked car on South Marian Road Thursday, about 250 damage.

Otto Miller, 57, was held without bail on a first degree murder charge for the stabbing and decapitation of his sister Olga Thiele, 59, diagnosed as the cause of death by autopsy. Miller had been living with Thiele since last July. no motive has been established.

A gunman robbed Albertsons Grocery Store in Spokane Valley Sunday night taking an undetermined amount of post Christmas receipts. The bandit watched the manager open the safe then forced him to fill a paper sack and fled on foot. A man matching the same description fled a valley drugstore earlier after being refused.

One Step Too Far on Thin Lake Ice Submerges Car
Leonard F. Holbert, 29, Caldwell, drove about 100 yards onto Lake Lowell Sunday afternoon. The ice broke and the car sank, about six inches thick farther from shore. Holbert swam to safety and deputies cited him for drunken driving after wreckers pulled the vehicle from the lake Sunday evening.
