The Sandpoint Lions Club Toys for Tots campaign serves 89 families with about 267 children receiving food clothing and toys. Donations reach over 4374 in funds plus extensive toy and clothing contributions from many groups and individuals.

Forest Service road damage from heavy December rains

District Ranger Jerry Stern reports repairs planned after December floods damaged Forest Service routes in the Lightning Creek drainage and nearby districts. Minor bridge and culvert washouts plus slides are noted with an estimated five thousand dollars on the Porcupine Creek bridge and higher repair needs anticipated in January ahead of spring tree planting.

Forest Service seeks mining entry withdrawal in Idaho road area

The Bureau of Land Management reports two Idaho sites proposed for withdrawal from mining entry by the Forest Service. One in Bonner County would protect a road into Long Mountain, serving 9 000 acres with 2 500 privately owned. miners could file claims off the right of way. The second site near Council would host a ponderosa pine seed orchard in Payette National Forest as part of a cooperative program with University of Idaho and state agencies.

Christmas Eve and Day Church Services Planned

Manly Sandpoint churches schedule traditional Christmas worship. Saint Agnes Episcopal Church hosts carols at 10 45 pm on Christmas Eve with an 11 pm service led by Bishop John Wyatt. Christmas Day services are not held there. Saint Joseph Catholic Church offers Yuletide music at 7 30 pm, carols at 8 30 pm, a procession, and a High Mass with incense. Christmas morning masses are at 8 am 9 30 am and noon. First Presbyterian Church features a cantata and a candlelight service on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day plans include a youth program and hymn sing. Highland Road Christian Church plans candlelight worship and special programs for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Beekeeper Bomba Plans Texas Bee Purchases for Idaho Group

Bonner County beekeeper Al Bomba, president of the Idaho association, travels to Texas to visit four major bee raisers and buy about 6 000 bees per hive nucleus totaling around 4000 dollars. He aims to help local beekeepers by tracking illegal hives and reducing disease from uninspected, out of state bees while noting Idaho honey mainly comes from clover alfalfa and fireweed.

Pickup Stolen Then Found Abandoned Near Highway 45

Richard Olanson reports his pickup stolen from downtown Sandpoint around 1 pm Tuesday. It was found abandoned on the Schwertzer Cutoff Road near Highway 45 at about 11:20 pm. State Patrol reports the owner left keys in the vehicle and suspects theft occurred between 10 pm and 1 pm.
