Winter Forecast From Folklore Promises Tough Season

Eighty six year old Kady Riersen in Wisconsin recalls a hard winter as prognosticators forecast a harsh season. Wooly bear caterpillars fat and dark coats, thick dog fur, and early animal behavior signal heavy snow and cold across the Midwest and West, with optimism for Aspen resorts in Colorado offsets by general hardship.

Cloudy conditions with a chance of snow showers and a risk of freezing rain tonight. Daytime temperatures near 25 to 30 degrees with no precipitation yesterday. Extended forecast calls for cold conditions with periods of snow and daytime highs in the 20s to low 30s, nights in the teens to low 20s. Sunrise 7 35 a.m. Sunset 4 p.m.

Wind Driven Fire Kills At Vandenberg Base

A brush fire driven by hurricane force winds roared through the 94,000 acre Vandenberg Air Force Base complex killing three people including base commander Col Joseph Turner and two civilians. More than 300 firefighters battled the blaze as winds gusted up to 7 mph with six bulldozers clearing firebreaks on a six mile front toward the Pacific. Grounded air retardant planes and an offshore rainstorm were expected to help containment. Turner, 48, was found in a missile launching area while attempting to inspect lines. Resting at Brooke Army Medical Center were burn victims including Clarence McAuley, 41, a bulldozer operator. others injured were minor. The base, a major West Coast aerospace facility, houses Titan Minuteman ICBMs Atlas and Scout rockets.

Bonner Hospital Seeks Expanded Beds and Budget

Bonner General Hospital plans to seek state approval for a 16bed expansion plus department growth. A preliminary study projects Bonner County population reaching 28 500 by 1982 and supports increased beds and diagnostic capacity. The hospital also approves a 1978 budget of 2 803 000 with taxes and patient revenues funding operations and plans a four mill levy.

Sandpoint Council Grants Licenses and Rejects Insurance Bid

In a 15 minute meeting four council members and six spectators attended. The council rejected a lone bid on employee casualty insurance from Swendig Insurance Agency and approved all liquor beer and wine license renewals. Outgoing members were absent. The Finance committee will negotiate a final settlement and reconsider the bid. Public Safety reports 10 liquor license renewals with two pending and eight off premises renewals. Two new applications were received and renewal of all licenses was approved.

Cascade Airlines Seeks CAB Certification Status

Cascade Airways plans to seek Civil Aeronautics Board certification as it outgrows commuter status. President Mark M Chestnutt told Boise Chamber of Commerce that 16 000 to 17 000 monthly passengers justify certificated operation and access to federal loans route subsidies and joint fares. The airline suspended Boise service in 1976 due to labor weather and economic issues and reinstated the route in August.

Toys for Tots drive tops $3,000 in Sandpoint fund

Donations today push the Sandpoint Toys for Tots total to 3101 with gifts from the Sandpoint MLS MLS president Steven Van Horne Pend Oreille Printers Daily Bee staff Stidwell Junior High School and local businesses. A $549.50 day brings in 549.50 more to reach the milestone helping local families enjoy Christmas.

Southside Fire Protection District Approved in Bonner County

Voters in the Southside Sewer and Water District approved creating the third rural fire district in Bonner County with all 52 ballots in favor. Hardy Lyons said hydrant installations would raise taxes but lower fire insurance costs, and noted seven county deaths in fires last month as a motivator.
