Senate Reverses House Vote To Slow Segregation
The Senate voted 5 to 37 to add HEW language diluting school desegregation provisions amid last minute administration pressure. Western Union telegraph messengers alerted senators at 4 a.m. about a nine page HEW message urging opposition to busing and freedom of choice. House supporters had earlier approved the provisions 158 to 141. A conference committee was named to resolve differences as adjournment looms.
