Deadlock on War Issue Broken

Congressional leaders broke a deadlock over ending the war and prepared to wind up the first session of the 92nd Congress. A compromise, after talks between House Speaker Carl Albert and Senate leader Mike Mansfield, calls for a House vote on Mansfield’s six month withdrawal amendment while allowing continued foreign aid at current levels until early March. The deal may allow action on major bills, including a long stalled campaign reform measure, with possible delays until Congress resumes January 18.

IRS Extends Tax Deadlines With Two Conditions

IRS Commissioner Johnnie Walters announced a two month automatic extension for income tax returns. Taxpayers must include a tentative tax estimate and agree to pay any balance due when requesting the extension. Formal regulations are in progress and unpaid bills accrue 6 percent interest plus penalties without reasonable cause.

Youth Program Appointments Named for Washington Trip

Idaho senators announced Chris W. Barnes from Moscow and John W. Rogers of Boise as the 10th annual United States Senate youth program selects. Barnes is 16 and attends Moscow Senior High School. Rogers is 17 and attends Capital High in Boise.

Sheriff Nabs FBI Fugitive and Accidental Driving Incident

A Dover man suffered facial cuts and was cited for inattentive driving after veering off Oak Street and into a parked semi trailer. Raymond A. Opland, 35, was treated at Bonner General Hospital. Elsewhere, Marvin Lee Lehnherr, 37, an FBI interstate flight fugitive, was arrested in Sandpoint after staying with relatives. He had prior license-related citings and a bench warrant for arrest. Burglars in London returned a noncolor TV and dumped a washing machine, per the prosecutor.

Free Saturday Kiddies Show in Sandpoint Retail District

Sandpoint merchants present a free movie program for shopping families. The feature is The Daring Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies with three cartoons, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday December 11, plus extended shopping hours Friday December 10, Friday December 17, and December 20 through 24 through 8 p.m. at downtown stores.
