Idaho In-Lieu Land Trade Sparks Campaign Clash

Idaho Attorney General Wayne Kidwell and Democratic challenger Mike Wetherell traded charges over the in lieu land settlement with the Interior Department. The pact gives Idaho 24000 acres of federal lands in exchange for state lands, with 10000 acres of timber lands in north Idaho and no Island Park area lands. Wetherell defended the deal as a landmark settlement and criticized Kidwell for questioning it, while Kidwell argued Idaho received less than its legal entitlement and called the agreement a political compromise tied to Democrats on the land board and former governor Cecil Andrus. The State Land Board approved the offer 3 to 2, with Gov. John Evans, Auditor Joe Williams, and Supt. Roy Truby in favor, and Secretary of State Pete Cenarrasa with Kidwell and Speaker Allan Larsen opposing.
