Schweitzer Ski Area reports six inches of fresh snow on a 26 inch packed base. Skiing described as good to excellent with two lifts operating Tbar three and chair one to the top. At 8 am the temperature is 18 degrees Fahrenheit and overcast.

Supreme Court reverses Idaho ruling on unemployment benefits

The Supreme Court says Idaho may deny unemployment benefits to those attending daytime college classes while providing benefits to night school students. Justices uphold that daytime work is more plentiful and attending day courses restricts full-time employment. Justice Brennan, Stevens and Marshall dissented on review and suggested reconsidering the night school phrase. The case centers on Marlene Smith, who lost weekly checks after enrolling in 7 to 9 am summer classes.

Sandpoint Highway District Voting Today

Voters may cast ballots until 7 PM at City Hall in the Sandpoint Independent Highway District election. Four candidates compete for two of three commissioner seats including Ward 1 contenders George Harper and Archie Yager and Ward 3 nominees Perry Palmer and Bert Lines. All residents 18 plus may vote for candidates from either ward. no prior registration required.

United Mine Workers to Strike at Midnight

United Mine Workers President Arnold Miller announced a 130,000 member strike at midnight with no prospect of a last minute settlement. Miller and coal operators president Joseph Brennan spoke as talks with federal mediator Wayne Horvitz continued in Washington.

Bee Announces Early Deadlines for News and Ads

The Daily Bee adopts 5 p.m. deadlines for display and classified ads and news items effective Thursday December 8, to shift to earlier printing. Managing Editor Ken Firoved says this will reduce carrier danger after dark and help finish routes in daylight.
